Council of Europe Annual Penal Statistics (SPACE)

Every year, the SPACE I survey provides data on imprisonment in the countries of the Council of Europe.

Data are collected by scholars of the University of Lausanne on behalf of the Council. They are organized by topic and country and they are accurately presented. Covering several different aspects related to the prison population, movements, and staff, the survey offers the most comprehensive and reliable set of data about prisons in Europe.

The main limit hindering extensive analyses of the data lies in the format of the survey, which comes in PDF – so tables need to be extracted.

The parallel project SPACE II collects data on non-custodial sanctions and measures.
